A good key result answers WHAT and measures quantifiable progress towards a goal.
Ask yourself - what does it mean for you to achieve that goal?
TIP: Follow the S.M.A.R.T. acronym to guide your key results. They should be...
Specific: simple, sensible, significant.
Measurable: meaningful, motivating.
Attainable: agreed, attainable.
Realistic: reasonable, realistic, resourced, results-based.
Timely: time-based, time-limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive.
There are generally two types of key results.
Repetition Key Result
Useful to keep you accountable for making progress towards your goals.
Calls with mom once a week for a month
Run once a week for a month
Meditate for 30 days
Accomplishment Key Result
Generally out of your direct control, and arises from downstream efforts,
Bench press 150lbs
Run 10 km in one go
Get a promotion at work
Think of yourself as a manager when defining your key results. Based on the abstract goals you have described, what outcomes will best define them?
When you start a key result, here are the best practices we recommend in setting up your properties. Make sure your core properties are filled out!
Between all the key results for the upstream goal, how impactful is this outcome?
Repetition Key Result: Set a range of dates for your start and stop dates.
Accomplishment Key Result: Set the date when expect to achieve the outcome.
Due Date (Optional)
I would recommend not using this for personal key results.
Target # (Optional)
Enter your target (eg. for bench pressing, 150).
Completed # (Optional)
Enter where you're at (eg. for bench pressing, 90).
Keep increasing this number as you get closer and closer to your target.
You will notice that the progress bar will also increase by the same increment.
Gamification Specific Properties
Difficulty # = Leave blank unless you know the effort this key result will take.
Tags = Big Win 💎
Use templates to help you autofill important properties and generate convenient tables in the page body to help you easily add downstream / upstream items.
TIP: It is always much easier to add new relational items from the tables generated in the page than from the properties.
Working On Your Key Results
I always recommend picking a few key results to focus on each month / week. This is what the Focus property is for, and the best template that utilizes this feature is our review cycles.
OKR stands for objectives and key results. It's a methodology heavily practiced by Amazon, Google, Facebook, and other teams and individuals to align on a bigger picture and move forward together.
When applied in a business setting, all team members involved gain a clear appreciation of company goals and how their team and individual can contribute towards that.
If you are able to use OKRs effectively in your personal life, you will be able to align and connect all your daily tasks to your overarching goals easily and efficiently.
